Learn more about how our programs impact present and future generations of LAFD firefighters.
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), more than 80% of first responders experience traumatic events on the job, and one in three develop post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) throughout their careers. The Behavioral Health Program was launched in 2018 to provide long-term and as-needed emotional and mental health support to LAFD members for incident-based trauma.
Launched in December of 2020 as part of the LAFD’s Behavioral Health Division, the Canine Therapy Program helps alleviate the psychological and emotional trauma firefighters face through positive engagement with certified therapy dogs. These canines help comfort firefighters in times of crisis, and make coping with trauma more manageable.
What start as a small effort by LAFD firefighters to raise funds for station essentials has grown into a robust program that helps address pressing fire station needs. The Adopt-A-Fire-Station program enhances living and working conditions for firefighters at all 106 LAFD fire stations across the city.
The LAFD Foundation funds four LAFD Youth Programs: Camp S.P.A.R.K., Youth F.I.R.E. Academy, the LAFD Cadets, and Fire and EMS Magnet High Schools. These exciting programs offer students the opportunity to learn about a career in the fire service through engaging task-driven activities. Participants develop skills in leadership and teamwork while building their overall confidence - expertise that can be applied to all aspects of life.
